About PsychCoalition
PsychCoalition is an emerging organization of psychologists who are concerned about the current course of the American Psychological Association (APA). The PsychCoalition was established to provide a voice for those marginalized and a vehicle for those whose professional practice is under threat. The American Psychological Association has historically provided a home for all psychologists, with the resulting diversity a measure of its strength. However, the processes used in recent decisions, the precedents being established and the overall absence of fairness and transparency within our professional association must be addressed. The purpose and goals of the PsychCoalition are as follows.
Purpose:
To provide a forum for an open, transparent, and fact-based flow of information concerning those areas of the science and profession of psychology outside those that are primarily health care and treatment based. We are focused on General Applied Psychology, to include consulting, forensic, criminal justice, police psychology, public safety, national security, operational psychology, behavioral science consultation, human performance, decision-making, organizational processes, leadership, human factors and resilience - all done in the service of addressing behavioral issues in individuals, groups, organizations, communities and the general public. The PsychCoalition also supports both General Applied and Health Service psychologists who seek a forum to advocate for an APA where facts drive decisions, critical thinking is exercised, civility permeate deliberations, diversity in perspectives and practice areas is valued, and processes are fair to all. We seek emphasize the breadth of the field, and the value that all psychologists bring to the discipline and those we serve.
Goals:
1. Provide a cohesive voice based on experience, knowledge, and research in the area of General Applied Psychology to the American Psychological Association, and to the public at large.
2. Provide subject matter experts in the competency areas of General Applied Psychology when needed to influence APA’s policies, rules, and guidelines.
3. Advocate on behalf of the processes, procedures and decisions representative of General Applied Psychology, and the role of psychologists whose practices are outside the realm of patient-centered treatment.
4. Build a broad coalition of General Applied Psychology and Health Service Psychology to advocate within APA for the advancement of psychology as a multi-disciplinary profession, drawing upon the strength of science, equity and inclusion.
